What makes a black cat black

A black coat comes from a gene that produces lots of dark pigment called eumelanin. Many different breeds can be black, including the Bombay, British Shorthair, Persian and Maine Coon.

• Their eyes are often bright gold or copper, which stands out against the dark fur.
• Some black cats turn slightly reddish-brown when they nap in the sun a lot, called rusting.
• In Japan and the UK, a black cat crossing your path is seen as good luck.
